We here at American NonFiction are Google whores. We love the company and use them to buy all of our domain names*
In the last issue of “Scream Binary: How to Make a Free Blog“, we learned about the free blogging platforms, Blogger and WordPress, and of their limitations. We found that the free blog-o-sphere has it’s own pros and cons.
For those of us who seek to go boldly into the independent Internets, we offer this starting tip to get you off on the right foot. Before you can have a website, you need to buy a domain. Remember when we asked you to think of a good name for your blog? Now, we are going to take that name and use Google to buy a domain.
Google Domain Good!
While there are many companies in the binary to help you register a domain, many will offer you a low price and then sell your information to the lowest bidder.
Google offers $10 domain names and assures it will never sell off your information. Google has continually proved it’s devotion to it’s customers. And until there is a change in their corporate structure, American NonFiction will remain a Google-whore.
Step 1. Go to Google
The first step for any purchase is to go to the store. You can search “Google Domain Name” or go to Google Apps’ domain page. Here you are given a choice of “I want to use an existing account” or “I want to buy a Domain name”. Click “I want to buy domain name”. Now click the option to check the availability of your chosen domain name.

Step 2. Check Availability
Here is where I should mentioned backups names. However the process is still pretty cut and dry. Enter in the name of the domain name you would like, choose the end suffix you would like. “.Com” is the standard, but if you want to be seen as an organization you might want “.org”.

Step 3. Sign up
Enter in all your information but be sure to check the Privacy options box to keep your information unlisted. Google will use this information to get a hold of you in case of an emergency with your domain name. Which never happens unless there is a question of legality. AKA, Don’t have a porn site.
Step 4. Sign in and Pay
Here is where having a Gmail account helps. If you don’t already have one, I recommend you get one now! There are many internet users who have stuck with their old mail systems and Google is here is help you into the future.
A Gmail account opens up the world of Google to you, in every speckled shade of internet brilliance. Armed with Gmail, you can access many useful internet functions and it’s free. In later issues of Scream Binary, we will uncover more Google brilliance for your blogging life. But for now, there you have it.
Domain Presto!
You have a Domain Name and, with the help of Google Sites, you can play around with the design. You have a simple site up and running. Type in your domain name into your browser’s address bar and check it out.
I know, you didn’t get into this business to have a Google site. You want the whole shebang and, next time, we will meet back here and find out how we can get our own domain and eat the cake, too.
