There are a boatload of social networking sites out on the superhighway and each one begs to be used and viewed. Currently, FaceBook has taken over the lead over Myspace and remains the social networking site for educational institutions and the corporate world. Where Myspace has let bands, companies, and corporate sponsored bots ruin the golden ideal of communication, Facebook has always kept a tight hold on user functions and insulated themselves from the Spam market.
Facebook’s tight hold over their users actions lead to person only profiles and rejected the bands, blogs, and assorted other non personal profiles popular on other social networks. Facebook started as a closed social network for use by educational institutions. Too keep the site a user run network, they gave the option for students to invite their friends to join. However, their friends could only make personal profiles and had to have a face picture to show their profile was themselves. As Facebook’s popularity grew and spread to college campuses across the country, Facebook opened up their doors to everyone, but still only gave them the option of a profile page about themselves.
That was until now. Facebook has opened up the gates. Their slow dragging feet might be the key to their future success or the step towards failure. The result is left up to the crystal ball. However, no matter the intended fate, you want to get your band on the Facebook wagon, before others catch on and flood the site. Though a key difference in Facebook’s public profiles may be it’s saving grace.
Unlike Myspace, where you use an entirely different e-mail to set up your band page, Facebook attaches your band page or public profile onto your name. The user is then attached and accountable for the actions of their profile page. With Facebook’s use of accountability, they may have saved themselves a Spam doom.
Are you sold on a Facebook Public Page for your band? Would you like to know how to get one? Well we arn’t telling, just kidding. As it is the American NonFiction way, we have 10 easy, no stress no mess, steps to setting up your Facebook Profile.
Step 1
Make sure you have an account with Facebook. You can sign up for free.
Step 2
Go to Create page link on facebook.
Step 3
Choose your category. Facebook has a category for every for almost anything imaginable. For American NonFiction’s category we chose “Website”. Your band might want to choose the category “Band”
Step 4
Enter the name of your band and sign your electronic signature.
Step 5
You are taken to your profile page. Now you will want to add a picture of your band, a bio of your band, your website*.
Step 6
Become a Fan of your page. There is a little link at the top of the page ironically marked “Become a fan”. I am going to take a wild stab in the dark and say this link makes your personal profile a fan of your public profile. You don’t have to click the button but, if you are making a public profile you don’t want to be a fan of, then why bother?
Step 7
Send Invites to all your friends. Friends = Fans right? I mean they arn’t going to dress up in a Rod Boobtube costume or anything, but they will check you out. In any event, they beef up your numbers and the number of times you flash on other people’s walls as your public profile get added.
Step 8
Use the “Add Admins” to add your fellow bandmates to your band public profile. Then they can add all their friends, and so on, so forth, and then you get a 50 foot screen filled with Mike Myer’s face a 100 times over in the role of Wayne of Wayne’s World. It’s a party time, excellent.
Step 9
Write a couple “What’s on your mind” posts. Link to any websites* you may have, coverage on blogs, or media links in general. Hell give shout out bands you love. Be sure to write things that will interest your “fans”. While I have never been able to accomplish this feat, I am sure you could do it far better than I.
Step 10
Sit back and watch all your friends check out your new profile page. Enjoy the new found Fackbook stardom and rejoice as I took a three step process and stretched it out into 10 easy steps.
