I bought this cd at Amoeba in San Francisco and listened to it when I got back, during my graveyard shift. I bought it because it was a featured artist in the black metal section and because it was released on Moribund Records which is the label that released Craft’s Terror Propaganda (good). Later I remembered that Moribund also releases cds by Sargeist (so, so) and lowered my expectations.
I once tried to write a book on the aesthetics of Darkthrone’s Blaze in the Northern Sky, and though I really do love some black metal, I often let my mind wander while listening to it and imagine that they are singing about non-satanic things. Basically all the songs on Celestial Bloodshed’s new album are about owing people money. The vocals are in a lower register and the music does not change enough to keep me interested. There are also little ambient interludes to calm you down between songs, but this is a nonissue if the songs themselves are no good.
I will be selling this cd back to Amoeba soon. If this was a fake review of a fake movie that I didn’t see I would tag on some short story about the band members of Celestial Bloodshed tracking me down, and maybe something about the Bernstein Bears Halloween books. But it’s not, so I won’t.
