The night shift comes in waves and, like a good surfer, a waiter better know how to roll with the flow. The first rush comes in the form of a late supper around 8pm, where families and traveling tourist make a tradition out of their meals . The second wave comes with A-listers and people of note who come in at midnight, before the drunken hordes can bother them with slurred question of their celluloid past. The third wave hits at last call, 2 am the drunken hordes swamp through the doors and shovel food into their beaming red faces. Then the joint empties out, most of us clean up and go home. Which was how Sticks found the place.

In many ways, the Hollyweird Cafe is the restaurant of my dreams. Though there are days when it’s also of my nightmares. Days when gaudy Gypsies layer more brown gravy over their food then you can fathom, when a table of full of ladies notice my wondering eyes, or when a crazy houseless takes a break from his pills and sits in my section. There are many things to dislike about the Hollyweird Cafe and fellow employees have alphabetized lists. But on a jumpin’ Saturday night, there is nothing else like it. A live band plays rock and roll to a dive bar crowd. A-listers, B-listers, and John Q. Public rub elbows at tables and booths. Buss boys play non-vindictive pranks on the more stressed out wait staff and tips flow like water. That’s life. I live for Saturday nights, big shows, and the Hollywood vibe.
I have said the West coast is no land for rebellion.The citizens come from a long line of compliance. From gold mines to the rail roads, every skin shade has suffered atrocities by their fellow man in the last frontier. On the shores of the East Coast, a monarch is hard pressed to find a foot hold in power, But the same can not be said for the West coast, where Joshua Abraham Norton was able to proclaim himself “Emperor of the United States, and Protector of Mexico.”
